Human Caused Water Pollution and Its Environmental Consequences

Water pollution has become one of the most serious environmental problems the world needs to face today, and its causes are deeply rooted in human activity. A major contributor to water pollution is industrial waste, which often contains harmful chemicals. A lot of the time, factories dump these substances into rivers, which lead to the oceans. These can contaminate drinking water sources, which can affect daily human life. Agricultural runoff is also another major cause for water pollution, when farmers use chemical fertilizers and pesticides, rainwater can wash off and carry these chemicals into nearby streams of water. Additionally, drinking water pollution can happen via the pipes themselves if the water is not properly treated, which leads to contamination. The effects of water pollution can cause algae bloom in the marine environment, which can create dead zones or low oxygen areas known as eutrophication. This causes plants and animals to suffocate. In certain cases, these harmful algae blooms can also produce neurotoxins that affect wildlife, from whales to sea turtles. Algae blooms can also cause health and economic effects for human, causing rashes and other diseases, while eroding tourism revenue for popular lake destinations due to their unpleasant looks and odors.
