The Positive Impact of Regular Exercise on Sleep Quality

Regular physical exercise has a significant positive impact on sleep quality in adults. One of the main reasons for poor sleep quality is stress, anxiety, and an irregular sleep schedule. Moving your body in a form of exercise helps as a natural stress reliever. After exercising, our brain produces happy hormones such as serotonin, which improves mood. This reduced stress condition and also reduced the level of cortisol in our body, which promotes a state of mental relaxation. As a result, people who engage in physical activities, especially high intesity workouts like weightlifting, running, and biking tend to fall asleep quicker and better rest in their sleep. Exercise also helps our body to build and sync our body's internal clock. This sync in our body's internal clock helps us to have a scheduled sleep, which in turn improves the sleep-wake cycle and overall sleep efficiency.

According to recent studies, including the one from the National Library of Medicine, adults who maintain a consistent exercise routine report improvement in their sleep duration and a reduction in symptoms of insomnia. This improvement is notably found in people who previously suffered from chronic sleep issues. Furthermore, people who work out regularly tend to have a healthier daily routine and sleep schedule, which further reinforces sleep quality. In contrast, people who lack an exercise routine often experience more stress, poor mental health, and disrupted sleep schedules. In short, regular physical activity leads to better sleep, which improves mood, mental health, and overall health condition.
